HAEMATOURIA

UROLOGIC DISEASES - SYMPTOMS - DIAGNOSIS - TREATMENT

You are here : Home page / Urological Diseases / Haematouria

Description

Hematuria ( = blood in the urine ) is one of the most severe symptoms in urology which must not be overlooked. The patient should consult a urologist and undergo a series of examinations (general test of urine and urine culture , ultrasound, x-ray kidney and bladder , cystoscopy , etc. )

What are the possible causes ?

Tumors of the urinary bladder, nephrolithiasis and urinary tract infections are only some of the commonest causes that can account for hematuria . Hematuria can occur in the absence of urinary disease when for example patients take anticoagulants , bleeding disorders, beetroot etc. Also if the presence of blood in the urine is accompanied by urgency of urination (!) it is extremely important to searchfor the underlying cause of Haematuria (a polyp of the urinary bladder).
Renal colic and hematuria often is due to Urinary stones . Frequent urination and urgent urination can often be due to infection, but the possibility of a polyp of the bladder can not be excluded.

Hematuria without any other symptoms (silent hematuria ) should be considered a symptom of bladder neoplasia.
Hematuria is an alarming symptom that should urge the patient to seek medical advise!
